True Patriots All explores the relationship between European Australia’s history, national identity and fiction. The title of this series is an ironic comment on European Australia’s apparently resolved vision of itself. What if anything is there to be patriot about? Yet the pull of patriotism continues to be felt, even desired, and it is this felt desire that provides an opening to address narratives of nationalism and the self.

The starting point for True Patriots All was an anthology of colonial broadsheets. The partial erasure of the text by each face creates a type of palimpsest; a composite form that speaks to the way personal identity and collective histories are structured around narratives of fiction. Viewed this way Australian history is not a unified, closed project, but rather a series of stuttered fragments, comprising an array of contested meanings.
